If you're having trouble getting your Ultimate Backup 4-in-1 working with your Android device, the vast majority of problems can be resolved with one of a few simple and easy steps. However, some issues may be caused by deeper software or hardware issues, or even damage to the drive. The steps below will likely resolve the issue you're experiencing. If not, please note the results of each step, as this will help our support team better understand and isolate the issue to provide relevant next steps.
- Ensure the Ultimate Backup has been connected to your Android device using the relevant configuration below:USB-C Android device
Micro USB Android device
- Remove the case from your Android device (if applicable).
- Some cases may be too bulky to allow for proper connection.
- Unplug your Ultimate Backup and plug it back in firmly.
- Push it all the way in. A drive that is only partly seated may get power but not connect.
- Flip the Ultimate Backup around so the logo is facing the other direction.
- Sometimes there may be dirt or debris preventing a proper connection.
- If this is the case, flipping the drive in the opposite orientation can be a simple workaround.
- Check the connector on your Ultimate Backup for damage.
- Try to gently wiggle the USB-C or Micro USB connector to see if it feels loose.
- This tip should feel rigid, so any play could indicate damage to the connector.
- If this tip feels loose or wobbly, it's likely damaged.
- Restart your Android device.
- Devices need to be restarted occasionally to continue operating as expected.
- Performing a quick restart will resolve almost any issue.
- Utilize a Google search for help with your specific Android device.
- Pull down the notification pane and read what the phone is saying about the drive — Android often states the problem there.
- “The drive isn’t formatted correctly.” — This one usually comes with “Tap to fix”, which reformats the drive. Do not tap it if anything on the drive still matters to you — reformatting erases everything on the drive. Connect the drive to a computer first and copy the Backups folder off with File Explorer or Finder; the data recovery article linked from the last step below walks through it. Once you have a copy somewhere else, or if the drive holds nothing you need, you can reformat from the notification or from one of the articles in the last step. After the reformat, and before your next backup, follow the steps in the How to Reset Ultimate Backup guide, choosing Erase All Backup Records, so the app backs up all of your files again.
-
“Can’t write to USB storage.” — The phone found errors on the drive and made it read-only to protect what’s on it, so the app can’t save new backups to it until it’s reformatted. Your files can still be read: copy the Backups folder off first, as above, then reformat the drive with one of the articles in the last step and erase the app’s backup records as above. Samsung phones show it like this (others word it differently). If the notification is collapsed, tap its arrow to expand it:
- “The device is charging.” — This means the connection was never fully established. Effectively, the phone is powering the drive but not talking to it. The fix for this one is following all steps laid out in this guide. If you've tried everything above, continue on to the steps below.
- Try cleaning the port on your Android device.
- Lint in the port can block the connection. Turn the device off, then look inside with a bright light.
- Brush the opening gently with a dry, soft brush. Ease out packed lint with a wooden or plastic toothpick, without scraping the contacts.
- Don’t blow into the port or use compressed air; both push debris further in.
- If it won’t come free, a repair shop can clear it. For more, see this guide.
- If possible, try your Ultimate Backup with other devices.
- If your phone has a microSD card in it, take it out and try again — a memory card can take the slot your Ultimate Backup needs. Resolving SD Card Conflict Issues on Android has the details.
- Close any open apps that may be running in the background.
- While uncommon, other apps may be using the resources Ultimate Backup needs.
- Please see this guide for help.
- Delete the Ultimate Backup app from your Android device, and reinstall it from the Play Store.
- Sometimes all that's needed is a fresh install of the most up-to-date version.
- After reinstalling the app, the backup will appear as though it's starting over.
- Don't worry, you won't end up with duplicates -- this backup will just take a bit longer.
- For help getting started, you can find our App Setup guides here.
- If possible, attempt to reformat your Ultimate Backup.
- Reformatting will completely erase the drive -- if data recovery is desired, stop here and proceed to this support guide.
- Reformatting is the final software troubleshooting step -- if any issues persist after, we can effectively isolate the issue to either the drive itself, or your Android device.
- For reformat instructions, select from the options below (if the drive isn't detected by your Android device at all, you'll likely need to utilize the Windows or Mac guide specifically):
- If you reformat from Windows or Mac, then before your next backup, follow the steps in the How to Reset Ultimate Backup guide, choosing Erase All Backup Records. Otherwise the app skips every file it has already backed up, and the reformatted drive stays nearly empty.
