If the Ultimate Backup app cannot find your drive on an Android phone that has an SD card fitted, taking the card out and setting the app up again is the first thing to try. The card can go straight back in once setup has finished.
Why the SD card gets in the way
Your Ultimate Backup and your SD card both appear to Android as removable storage. When the app asks you to point it at your drive, it is being offered two removable devices rather than one, and that is what confuses the picker.
With the card out of the phone, the drive is the only removable storage attached, so there is nothing else for the picker to offer.
This applies to Android devices with a card slot only
Only Android phones and tablets that take a removable SD card are affected. If your device has no card slot, or you are using an iPhone or iPad, this is not the cause and there is no card to remove.
What to do
- Power your phone off.
- Remove the SD card. If you are not sure where the card sits on your phone or how to release it, How To Remove SD Card From Android - Full Guide covers it.
- Power your phone on again.
- Set the app up again from the beginning, following this support guide.
Power the phone off before you take the card out, as in step 1, rather than pulling it while the phone is running.
Work through the setup guide as though the app were new to the phone. With the card out, the drive is the only removable storage for the app to find when it asks you to select it.
Putting the card back
Once setup has finished, the SD card can go back into your phone. Power the phone off first, as you did in step 1, then put the card in and power it on again. The card only needs to be out while you set the app up.
