There are two Ultimate Backup drives to choose from today: Ultimate Backup MAX and Ultimate Backup SSD. Both save your photos, videos and files onto a drive you keep yourself, and both are used with the Ultimate Backup app. What separates them is the shape of each drive, the devices it can plug into directly, and how much storage you get for the money.
Ultimate Backup MAX
MAX is the flash-drive style drive. Its form factor is the convenient one: small enough for a pocket, a handbag or a drawer, and easy to pick up whenever you want to run a backup.
It also has the most robust compatibility of the range, so it is the more flexible choice if you back up a mix of things — phones and tablets as well as computers.
MAX is sold in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

Ultimate Backup SSD
SSD is the external-drive style drive. It is physically larger than MAX, and while it works with most modern phones and tablets, it does not connect directly to older mobile devices — so it is the better fit when most of what you back up lives on a computer.
In return it gives you room. SSD offers the higher capacity options in the range, at a better price per gigabyte — which matters once a photo and video library has been growing for a few years.
SSD is sold in 500GB and 1TB.

What about the Ultimate Backup 4-in-1?
The Ultimate Backup 4-in-1 is the earlier drive in the range, and Ultimate Backup MAX is the model that has taken its place. It is no longer listed among the products on the website, though models that have come off the main line-up are sometimes brought back for a sale.
If you already own a 4-in-1, none of this changes anything for you. Your drive is still supported, and the Help Center articles that cover it are still here for you to use.
Which one suits you?
- Reach for MAX if you mainly back up phones and tablets, or you want something you can slip in a pocket and take with you.
- Reach for SSD if you have a large library, mainly back up computers, and want the most storage for your money.
If you are somewhere in between — a good-sized library, but phones and tablets to look after as well — MAX at one of its larger capacities is often the more comfortable fit, because it has the broader compatibility of the two.
