Yes! Ultimate Backup works with most digital photo frames and smart TVs that have USB connections. Ultimate Backup just plugs in and your pictures will be displayed.
Does it work with ALL digital photo frames and TVs?
As you can imagine, there are hundreds of television and digital picture frame models and each has its own way of working with USB drives. We've tested our Ultimate Backup drives on many different brands with great results. The Ultimate Backup drive downloads your photos in the same file structure that is on your computer. TVs and digital photo frames then vary in the way they can process this information. The issue lies in the "operating system" of the TV or photo frame and how it looks at FOLDERS. TVs and photo frames can have different "operating systems," even if made by the same manufacturer.
When you insert a USB drive in the TV or digital frame, does it display folders?
If so, your TV or photo frame will work with Ultimate Backup. The Backups folder is where the photos are stored. After opening this folder, you can navigate further to the location of the pictures that you wish to display.
Which drive works best?
It comes down to what is inside the drive.
- Flash drives — Ultimate Backup 4-in-1 and Ultimate Backup MAX. These draw the least power, so they are the safest choice for a photo frame or a TV.
- Ultimate Backup SSD, 500 GB and 1 TB. An SSD draws a little more power than a flash drive, but showing photos is light work, so it usually works on a TV. A photo frame may not be able to power it. An SSD has no moving parts, so it is not a hard drive.
- Other external hard drives. If you are using a standard external hard drive rather than an Ultimate Backup drive, it needs a burst of power to start spinning that most TV and photo frame USB ports cannot provide, so it may click, or appear and then vanish. A TV port marked for hard drives (often labeled HDD) can work; photo frames usually cannot.
It is not always about power.
Many TVs and photo frames read only FAT32 or exFAT, some will not mount a large capacity at all, and some TVs cut the power to their USB ports in standby, so the drive has to start up again when the TV wakes.
If the drive is not recognized
Try a different USB port on the TV — the one marked for hard drives, if there is one — or plug the drive into a USB hub that has its own power adapter. If it still will not show up, one of the flash drives above is the surest option. If the TV offers to format the drive or set it up for recording, say no: that would erase your photos.
Play it safe.
We recommend purchasing another Ultimate Backup drive so that you can use one to display your pictures on a digital frame or TV and always keep the other one in a safe place!
