Check the address an email actually came from. We send from a short, known list of addresses, and anything outside that list is worth a second look before you act on it. If you are not sure, send it to us and we will tell you whether it came from us.
Addresses we send from
These are the addresses you will most often see a genuine Ultimate Backup email come from:
- sales@ultimatebackup.com — sales and marketing email.
- support@ultimatebackup.zendesk.com — replies to a support ticket you have opened with us.
That list is not exhaustive, and other genuine email from us comes from the ultimatebackup.com domain. If an address is neither of the two above and does not end in @ultimatebackup.com, treat the message as suspicious.
A matching address is not proof on its own, though. The sender address shown on an email can be forged, so the warning signs below are worth checking even when the address looks right. If a message does not obviously look wrong but you cannot place it, do not act on it straight away. Send it to us to be checked first.
Warning signs to look for
- The full sender address, not the display name. A name such as "Ultimate Backup Support" can be typed by anyone. Open the sender details and read the address itself, including everything after the @.
- Links that may not go where they claim. Hover over a link with your mouse, or press and hold it on a phone, to see the real address before you click.
- Unexpected attachments. Invoices, receipts or shipping notices you were not expecting are a common way to deliver something harmful.
- Urgency and threats. Warnings that your account or your files will be suspended or deleted unless you act within a few hours are designed to stop you checking.
- Requests to confirm details you never gave us. If a message asks you to verify something we would have no reason to hold, treat it as suspicious.
What we will never do
We will never ask you for your password. A genuine email from us will also never need payment card details supplied by reply — card numbers are not something to send by email to anyone, ourselves included.
If a message looks wrong
- Do not click any links in it.
- Do not reply to it, even to ask whether it is genuine.
- Do not open any attachments.
- Send it to us through our contact page so we can take a look.
If you have already clicked a link or typed your details into a page you now doubt, change the password on any account where you entered it. Open that site yourself rather than following any link in the email, and let us know when you get in touch.
When in doubt, ask us
Checking with us costs nothing, and we would far rather look at ten emails that turn out to be genuine than have you act on one that is not. If an email says it is from us and you are not certain, ask us before you click, reply, or pay anything.
If you have an email you would like us to check, or you think you may have replied to a fake one, contact us and we will be happy to help.
