While a backup is running on a phone or tablet, stay on the app's backup screen and leave the device alone. The backup runs only while that screen is in front of you.
What happens if you switch away
If you move to another app, or send Ultimate Backup to the background, the backup finishes the file it is part-way through and then stops safely. It does not carry on in the background.
Why it stops rather than continuing
This is deliberate. On iPhone and iPad especially, iOS has been known to stop the backup unexpectedly once the app is in the background, and a backup interrupted in the middle of writing a file can leave that data damaged. Finishing the current file and then stopping cleanly avoids that.
Nothing is lost when it stops
Reopen the app with your drive connected and start the backup again. It picks up where it left off and skips everything that is already saved, so you are not starting over.
Getting through a long backup
The easiest approach is to tap Start Backup, put the device somewhere out of the way, and leave it be until it finishes. If you are backing up a large number of files, it is worth setting the screen to stay awake longer beforehand, so it is not dimming and locking while the backup works.
This applies to the mobile app only
A backup running on a computer is not affected by any of this. Everything above concerns backups made on a phone or tablet.
